Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV: Packed and Ready for Home
Porsche’s 16 overall victories a Le Mans, not to mention the German automaker’s innumerable racing triumphs in all forms of motorsport, would never have been possible without a lumbering truck like this one. And no, it’s not a Cayenne. In fact, it happens to wear a gleaming Mercedes-Benz badge on its nose.

My final moments at the Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca were spent (quite literally) in the shade of this 1968 Mercedes-Benz bus, which the Porsche factory converted to a racecar transporter. It served the factory racing team from 1968 to 1989, before being restored by Gerry and Tom Sutterfield of Palm Beach, California.

In pristine condition, both inside and out, the giant white steering wheel is almost horizontal and looks as wide as a manhole cover. Maneuvering this former city bus through a crowded paddock would have required a high level of skill and commitment – especially considering the precious cargo loaded inside.
